This is something that HammerKit makes easy. First create a component with the layout of your header. Then use a Component Include in your default template to place the header at the top of the template. What is the benefit of doing it this way, you ask? Well, it means you can modify the header separately from the template, so for example, if you want to add a row of adverts, you can just change the images in the header and they are automatically shown across all pages that use your default template.
